Jacqueline Jean Hutching-Ellis (Jackie) was born in Gary, Indiana, on May 27, 1951 to John Woodley Hutching Jr., and Bollis Todd. Jackie received her primary education from the Gary Public School System. Jackie graduated from Tolleston High School in 1969, where she participated in ballet, marching band, cheerleading, and was crowned Homecoming Queen.
In 1972, Jackie moved to the Indianapolis area to begin her secondary education with a concentration in Business. Jackie professed an interest in Christ as child. She was baptized and active in many ministries throughout her youth. Throughout adulthood, she was led to became a part of many church ministries within the Indianapolis area to include Scott’s United Methodist, Westside Missionary Baptist Church, Healing Streams Worship Center, and Holy Spirit-Led Church. Jackie had a passion to serve, proactively participating in hospitality, ushering, intercessory prayer, praise dancing, and anything else that she thought was needed. Jackie’s relationship with Christ was exhibited through her continuous thirst for The Lord, and the compassion, love, and inclusion of all she met. Jackie was blessed and leaped at the opportunity to visit one of the oldest cities in the world, Jerusalem, Israel with one of her “most dearest” friends and prayer partner, Cathy Cole.
Jackie worked in retail, home healthcare, and approximately 34 years as a correctional officer, most of those years between Indiana Girls School and Volunteers of America. Her career in corrections allowed her to share not only her personal trials and triumphs, but the word of God with many.
She also cultivated many life-long mentorships/friendships with her co-workers and the population she served. Being flagged down in a public place with, “Ms. Jackie, I love and miss you,” or “You saved my life!” followed by hugs, often tears, and the “Ms. Jackie don’t play!”, were a common occurrence when out in public places with her family.
Jackie was a devoted mother, godmother, and friend. Jackie loved, cherished, and supported each of her children individually and collectively. She enjoyed laughing until she was in tears, watching movies, traveling, cooking for any and every one, “handing out spankings” in Spade games, dancing, singing, listening to music, quality time with “all my girls” (daughters), “talking stuff," and fellowshipping.
Jackie transitioned to her final resting place at the age of sixty-nine years, two-months, and eleven days. Jackie spent her final moments at home, surrounded by her loving family and dear friends on Thursday, August 13, 2020 at 0420 hours. Jackie’s quick wit, genuine love, snappy comebacks, and simply organic “tell it as is” attitude will be missed immensely.
Jackie was preceded in death by her parents, Bollis and John; adoptive parents, Edward and Doris Spears; second mother/aunt, Francis Hubbard aka “Nanny”; companion, Hershel Hill, aka “Pops”; goddaughter, Charece Watson; and sister-friends, Sandra Smith, Gretchen Deshazier, Saritia Watson, and Patricia Hendricks.
