Dorethea Anderson (Bell) was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to Nathaniel and Winniebee Bell. She attended McKinley High School. She was married to Clarence Anderson
and six children were born to this union. She confessed her faith in Christ at an early age and was baptized in the river in Baton Rouge. After moving to Indianapolis with her family in 1957, she became a lifelong member of Phillips Temple CME Church. She served as a missionary and was a member for sixty-five years devoting her time to providing many dishes to several church functions. She was mostly rememberd for her signature potato salad. She loved traveling with the church youth organization as a chaperone and mentor. Dorethea worked twenty-eight years as a waitress in the food service industry, and her last job was at the luxurious Marott Hotel. She always told stories of the many famous people that she was able to meet there. Dorethea loved her family and serving the Lord. In 1982, mom was blessed to find out that she had more family that consisted of her biological father, Calvin H. Spears, and three brothers. They spent ten glorious years together before his death in 1992. She will be remembered for her interior designs, her love for Southern cooking, her love for traveling, and for being the fashionista of the family. Her wealth of knowledge and wisdom was poured out in every conversation, along with love and encouragement; from this she gained many adopted children that claimed her as their mom. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three brothers, Emerson Bell, Charles Bell, and Edgar Spears; one sister, Rosetta McDowell, one son-in-law, Bill Hurd; one daughter-in-law, Ahkila Thaaquib; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She leaves to cherish her memory: two brothers, Calvin T. Spears and Warren E. Spears; five sons, Roy, Nurrudin, Bernell (Liz) Ronnie, (Trina), and Daniel (Patti); one daughter, Vanessa Hurd; twenty-five grandchildren;, fifty- seven great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other family and friends.
